So many guys come in to His Way with “back problems.” They want their family back, their job back, the car back, the house back, the friends back, the respect back, and the trust back. These things are all admirable things to desire, but they cannot be our focus. If all of our goals are physically obtainable objects, once we gain them, then what?
We have to come up with new things to obtain, which can create an unquenchable greed in us, or we have to lose it so that we can pursue it again. God did not create us for a “rat race”, yet most of us seem to get caught up in it. A lot of us seek material possessions first and follow God second. But Jesus teaches us something quite different in the Sermon on the Mount…”Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Mathew 6:31-33)
As Christian men and women, we need to evaluate and possibly change our aim. Our aim should not be material possessions, but instead, it should be an ever growing relationship with Him. If that is our aim, God will give us the things we need. If God is our aim we can begin to learn what it means to be content.
